Funghi Fest. Jan 17, 2010 @ House of Foods

It was an uneventful weekend until we saw the bat signal beacon from the House of Foods from the San Carlos foothills.  Instead of a bat, this time it was mushroom...ala Mario Brothers.  We knew Funghi Fest was about to go down.

We had a variety of mushrooms (Alba Clamshell, Nebrodini, Forest Nemenko, Velvet Pioppini) from Gourmet Mushrooms, Inc.  In addition to great friends and wine, here's what went down.

Chicken Pate with Cranberry Compote
Funghi Risotto
Beef Barley Mushroom Soup
Pork Belly Roulade with Funghi Duxelle inspired by Pork, Knife and Spoon

Building a better block...

Knife block that is. I've been trying to piece together a set of knives that works best for our style of cooking. Our set must excel at cutting chinese vegetables, deboning meat and slicing sashimi. We already have a chinese butcher knife and we don't eat that much bread so no need for a 8" chef's or bread knife. Without ado, here's our set.

Block: Wusthof 10 slot Walnut block.

Knives: Wusthof 4.5" Chef's Knife, Wusthof 3" Serrated Paring Knife, Henckels 3" Paring Knife, Wusthof 5" Santoku Knife, Wusthof 7" Santoku Knife, Wusthof 8" Carving Knife, MAC Japanese Style Pointy 6" Boning Knife and lastly, Wusthof come apart shears.

Need to move down to San Diego...but then again I might turn out like Ari with mercury poisoning

Weekend in SF..bubbles, wicked and birdies

Our weekend in SF was fantastic! It was jam packed with activities and some unexpected surprises.

Friday: Left work early and Caltrained up to check in at the Interconti. Got upgraded to a better room with a large bottle of Evian and fruit platter. Amy drove up after work and off we went to Bacar. Had 20 fresh oysters, Risotto Balls, Caesar, Baja Crispy Fish Tacos, Kennebec Fries, Homemade Flatbread with Hummus, and way too many glasses of French 75 (gin, champagne, lemon juice, and simple syrup.)

After Bacar, a quick nap back at the hotel. Then off to Bubble Lounge to meet up with Amy's Seattle friends for more drinks followed by late night pizza by the slice.

Sat: Got an early start with Breakfast at Luce.

Then waited in line for the Wicked Ticket Lottery, $25 for limited view seats. Got one ticket for the 2pm showing but needed two so we hit up Union Square, went back for the 8pm lottery and scored two tixs! Woohoo. A yelp iPhone app search resulted in a quick dinner at Basil Thai Restaurant and Bar in Soma. They had the best Tom Ka Gai I've ever had and the Phad Thai was tops. Fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced!

The view from our lottery seats wasn't the best but wicked as awesome. Great musical and definitely worth seeing.

Got back to the hotel around midnight and stupidly decided to watch "Duplicity" even though we both had to get up at 8am. Entertaining movie...stupid ending.

Sunday: Breakfast at Luce again. The wife had to work and I headed up to Poplar Creek Golf Course in Burlingame. Windy and cold resulted in a pretty pathetic score but had a great time with Lee, Dan and Corey and saw ducks, canadian geese, and a jack rabbit.

I'm no girly-mon

Picked up the Craftsman 172 pc. 80th Anniversary Mechanics Tool Set at Sears.  Have always taken the car to the stealership to be fixed but to prove my man-li-ness in my old age, it's time to get these supple hands greased up.  Who need to me to fix something?  I don't make any promises I can actually fix anything, but I'm sure impressive with my Tool Set.

A place called home and weekend in SF

Tweets, posts, blogs....I must admit I have left a trail of disastrous vignettes on my life across Al Gore's Internet...pronounced, in...ner...net.

Time to try out Sachin's brainchild, Posterous and I have high hopes for this one. Being able to email posts instead of logging in is boring and nouveaux at the same time. My email composition speeds are at warp 5 and I can do it in less time than logging into twit-book-ger. The bar is set...I'm calling Posterous home. nuff said.

The wifey and I are headed into SF for some R&R this weekend at the Intercontinental in SoMa. We've done this rendezvous last year when the hotel just opened and it was awesome! Elite in a hotel chain means upgraded room, fresh fruit and bottled water, and we even got access to the club last time. Free booze, mini bottles of S. Pellegrino and Golf Digest for me, salumi and mini eggrolls for the mrs.
